Between 1979 and 1984, the New York Islanders reached five consecutive Stanley Cup Finals, winning the annual National Hockey League (NHL) championship four times in a row. The franchise first appeared in the Stanley Cup Final in 1980, facing off against the Philadelphia Flyers. The Islanders took the series in six games, including overtime victories in Game 1 and Game 6.
The Islanders returned to the Stanley Cup Final the following year. New York eliminated the Minnesota North Stars in five games, taking their second championship and capping off a dominant 15-3 postseason. Over the course of the 1981-1982 season, the Islanders set a franchise record with 54 wins. The team later swept both the Quebec Nordiques in the conference finals and the Vancouver Canucks in the Stanley Cup Final.
Despite winning 12 fewer games during the 1982-1983 season, the Islanders returned to the playoffs and reached the Stanley Cup Final for a fourth time after competitive series against the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins. New York defeated the Edmonton Oilers for the franchise's most recent Stanley Cup trophy, winning all four games and outscoring the Oilers 17-6. The Islanders made a fifth Stanley Cup run in 1984 but lost a rematch with the Oilers in five games. Only the Montreal Canadiens have managed to win at least four Stanley Cup trophies in succession.
